Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this city or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow… James 4: 13-14a
I’m just going to say it: finding a job is probably the biggest mountain I’ve climbed in my life. And I haven’t even gotten too far down the trail yet.
I fairly sure that by now, you know that my eyes look to the future wide with dreams and hopes, after all, we all do. But, the wrinkle in this thing we’re currently in the middle of (also known as life) comes when those plans and dreams don’t immediately come to fruition upon our wishing for them or thinking them up. What are we suppose to do when we’re in the hallways of life, looking for the next door to walk through?
What I’ve learned and am learning every day in this season of my life is to trust God and realize that especially now, when I have no idea what tomorrow may bring, I need to live in the day that I’m in. Maybe my storytelling dreams really will happen – they could start tomorrow, later today even. Or, just as likely, they may be another six months or five years away. All I can do in the mean time is surrender to God’s plan and keep moving.
There are two ways of looking at surrender – one is believing that in the act of surrender, you give up all power and become totally helpless. The other is that in surrendering, or giving into God, you are allowing Him to use His full power to infiltrate your life and work for you. I’ve had times in my life where, literally just moments after surrendering to God, He came rushing like a wild, pulsing river into the situation with an answer and action. In my current life situation however, the river feels more like a water park’s lazy river variety. Every day has become an exercise in surrender – to His plans over my dreams, to His timing over my timeline. And in doing so, I can choose one of two things: (1) believe the lie that in surrendering, I render myself helpless or (2) return (repeatedly when need be) to the promises of His provision.
We are not powerless, we are backed and led by the All-Powerful.
How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.
Psalm 13

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
