A few weeks ago, I visited the New Mexican wilderness on my fourth back packing trip. I know, I know…as Jack said to Rose in the movie Titanic, I seem a little more like an indoor girl, but surprise my friends, I love a little wilderness too. That being said, there’s no way I could go on these trips without the know-how of my seasoned and trained fellow backpackers. And as a result of their knowledge, there really only are three things that I need to know before emarking on the trip:
1. New Mexico is beautiful. Though there are many stretches of desolte land, the mountains are striking and the open wilderness begs the soul to come out of its shell and run. I repeat, New Mexico is beautiful!
2. The pre and post Pecos Backpacking Golden Rule is: Casa de Hererras.
3. Love and embrace the Tererro General Store. Your last stop before leaving the modern world and your first stop upon re-entering it, they offer friendly faces, good stories and hot showers (and the best $5 you will ever spend!).
