Let’s be honest: job searching is not for the faint at heart. It requires focus to propel yourself towards the types of jobs that will engage your mind and heart as well as ridiculous determination and resolve to not give up or give in. So, to keep my own spirits up, I’ve looked to an old favorite: inspiration boards – and no, I’m not talking the digital kind. While I do spend plenty of time on Pinterest, I’m old school and prefer my boards right where I can see them – next to my work space.
It all started when I was a little girl and would thumb through my grandma’s old issues of Good Housekeeping and Ladies Home Journal. I’d rip out photos of everything from food to the creepy doll (which I LOVED at the time) advertisements they featured in the early 90s and make themed collages on her refrigerator. Yes, this really was one of my first hobbies. There was something about all the images, each individually provoking something in my mind, but creating this overall art piece that made me happy and allowed ideas and plans to swell up.
These days, I prefer cork boards to fridges and pull from magazines (usually fashion ones), newspaper articles (usually travel ones), borrow from internet greats (sorry, Scott, but I think your site and two books mean you’re doing just fine), and other random places.
The whole project is super easy and cheap.
Materials: Cork board (can be found place that sells office supplies, from Ikea to Target to Office Depot)
Push pins
your personal inspirations
- Decide what how to arrange the boards.
- Using the push pins, pin the boards into the wall with a pin in each of the top corners of every board.
- Add your inspirations.
See? I told you it was easy!
The things that tend to draw my eyes are: intense or incredibly soft color combos, beautiful lighting, encouraging words, wild nature, boldness, delicateness, confidence, and Paris at anytime and in anyplace. (I bet you saw that last one coming!)
What kinds of things inspire you? And do you makes things kinds of boards too – and are they virtual or old school?
