I found out I was accepted to Baylor the week of their homecoming. It was an accident, really. Logging on to my application account to check if the school had received the needed transcript, I found more than I was expecting: an e-CONGRATULATIONS. In some ways, I’d waited my whole life for that moment: a final confirmation that I too would be a Baylor Bear.

 I remember a few days later, standing in the bonfire crowd and taking in the festive scene. Baylor had always been my parents’ and then my brother’s, but next year, it would be mine too. Life was changing, or perhaps taking off – that week was a confirmation.

That night, if I had told that seventeen year old girl where she would be six years later, her head would have spun. The truth is, that girl expected to go to Baylor, meet someone and fall in love, get married relatively soon after graduation, and settle somewhere in the north Texas area. Simple, clean cut, there you have it: the future in a single sentence. They say that if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans, but in this girl’s case, I think her plans just made Him smile as He knew how different the path was to be. Who knows, maybe that is the next bend in my course, but maybe it’s not. I’ve been reminded the last few days how powerless we are with the fruition of our future plans. That’s His business, not ours – a truth that can make us feel completely helpless or fully hopeful. I’m embracing hope, fully.

God, thank you for allowing Baylor to be part of my path. I may not be in Waco to celebrate today, but I carry the place with me. It was and is a blessing that only deepens with time.
