Perched towards the top of the city in the 20th arrondisement, Pere Lachaise Cemetery dates back to 1804. It’s a sprawling area of trees, quiet, and yes, about 70,000 permanent resters whose grave markers that range from tall headstones to mini-palaces bigger than my apartment. Some parts of the one hundred acres are as Edgar Allen Poe-ish as you would imagine a 200 year old tomb-city to be: ivy and moss sprawling over half-sunken tombs whose names are nearly effaced by wear and time. But then you see people quietly visiting the tombs of loved ones amongst the groups of tourists bidding a bonjour to Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, or Chopin and you realize this is as much a place for the alive as it is for the dead.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
