Saint Clotilde Basilica is young by European standards. Built in the mid 19th century, the church sits  smack dab in the middle of my present life in the 7th arrondisement. Just across the street from my neighborhood grocery store, I pass it often, always glancing up at its gargantuan presence and intricate stone: it seems like an impenetrable, sleeping giant. I also nearly daily hear its bells trill across St. Germain Boulevard to tell me the hour from my open window.

In the hours after school, you’ll find boys playing soccer at the foot of the entrance and parents watching their little ones frolic in the adjacent park and mini-playground. I find it ironic how despite crowds attending for worship, churches here still draw-in people: some to wonder at the architecture and others to sit in its shadow to find quiet and rest.
