What can I say? I can’t believe SING is this week and I won’t be there. It’s difficult to explain SING to non-Baylor people, because it’s so much more than the seven minute mini-Broadway show that each group performs three nights for two weekends in February. It’s the hours upon hours of practice that groups endure. It’s the fact that sometimes, you love and hate your SING chairs at the same time. The fact that rumors run rampant for weeks leading up to SING and it’s only when the curtain goes up that everyone knows what was true or false. It’s that in that moment as the curtain goes up and you hold your breath for the millisecond before the lights come on, that you can’t believe you’re about to perform for a few thousand people. It’s the thrill of the front row, the pride of your signature move, and the total delight of watching friends and even people you don’t know dance and sing onstage. It’s the critiques and scores you make with friends and family as well as the hours of further debriefing after the show. It’s the ridiculously obsessive way you find a way into the show every night, only to watch the same acts for the fourth or fifth time. It’s the fact that SING is so Baylor and you so love Baylor.
Even more, this year it’s the fact that my dear friend David has spent the last year of his life crafting an act for his fraternity that I know is going to be incredible. Dave, I hate that I won’t get to see it and can’t be in the audience to cheer you on, but know that I’m so proud of what you’ve done and will be thinking of that Waco Hall spotlight for the next two weekends. Wish I could be there, well if I’m completely honest, I wish I could still have my spot on the front row with Tri Delt, but for this year, cheering from Paris and YouTube will have to suffice. Sic’em PhiChiO and Tri Delt!
