From Hamilton Mesa, one of our favorite walks is to the nearby Beatty’s Cabin. Rising from the Pecos River as your cross a foot bridge, the amphitheater meadow surrounds you on three sides with natural perfection. Trails lead on to higher bluffs and mountain peaks, down in the floor of the meadow is where I like to stay, with the wind whistling through trees and grass and the river rushing through the land. The place practically begs you to come and rest.
On this recent trip, after lunch under the shade of trees, I was compelled by the babbling river and the cool, green grass to lay down and take a nap among the wild flowers. In the cool contentment of the moments before sleep took over, I remembered the words of Psalm 23.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.
Be it rest from a morning’s semi-strenuous walk or an on-going job search, I laid still and thought about how God is my great Provider regardless of the situation I am in.
I wouldn’t be telling the whole truth though, if I didn’t admit that it can be especially difficult to fully trust that I am in the middle of a plan (instead of the middle of nowhere) when life has me in uncertain circumstances or I’m forced to play the waiting game. When it feels like nothing is happening, the visible, tangible facts beg to differ with His promise that He always, ever-minute-of-the-day trust He is behind the scenes working.
However if I fully trust that He is with me and is my Provider (and I do) than I need to amend the statement above…Then why is it especially difficult when life God has me in uncertain circumstances of I’m forced to play the waiting game to trust that He is behind the scenes working? If I believe that God is with me and directing me, than I have to believe that wherever I am, He’s led me here for a reason. And even if I don’t know where I am or where I am going, He’s got it….and probably wishes I would loosen up and enjoy the ride a little bit more.
I have this thought on a regular basis that when we get to heaven, we’ll going to see our lives with all the dots connected. As in, we’re going to see in one large screen shot how God interceded for us here…and here…and here and how He protected us there…and there…and there and how He provided for us and blessed us from our first moment to our last. And in that moment when I see clearly, I have a feeling I am going to be overwhelmed with the thought of WHY THE HECK DIDN’T I COMPLETELY, FULLY, WHOLLY TRUST? I don’t want to look back on my life and regret not trusting my God fully.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.
He gives the best gifts. Beatty’s Cabin is one of those gifts, and so is this moment in my life.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
