10 facts of life for me and my petit appartement:

1. Let’s get this straight: I live in something called a “chambre de bonne” which is a clever French euphemism for former maid quarters. I even have a separate stairwell to my apartment. That’s so there’s no congregating with the elite, you see.

2.  In December I visited an old roommate at her new apartment in Dallas. Giving me a tour, she led me to her garage which I foretold to be bigger than my future apartment. What I didn’t expect was for her garage to be more than twice as big as my apartment. I’m not sure whether to blame Paris’ lack of space or Texas’ hogging of it.

3. Every morning, I gage how cloudy/ foggy it is by looking out the window of my bathroom. The easier I see Sacre Coeur in the distance, the clearer the sky is.

4. My shower is a challenge. Imagine if you will, taking a shower in a life-size Barbie box – this is what I’m dealing with. If the curtain doesn’t fall down mid-soap up, count your blessings. Leaning against the back wall of the shower means taking the risk of burning your backside on the hot water pipe. Last but not least, a quick move in any direction means possibly jabbing the faucet with your back, your elbow or your side into the off position.

5. Upon moving in to my apartment, I was told that the meanest, rudest, most easily annoyed people in the building lived directly beneath me. In my landlord’s words, “Oh, they’re just so French.” Again, not my words – hers. Thankfully, with no run-ins so far, I can’t attest to whether this is true or false. Although, I must add that when I moved in, my landlord explained that the only way to close and lock my door was to literally slam it shut – I’ve since discovered this to be untrue. Perhaps my neighbors unjustly received their reputation, I for one know I wouldn’t appreciate slamming doors at all hours either. I still however don’t want to test my theory.

 6. Someone in the apartment beneath me practices the piano every Friday afternoon from 5-6:30 p.m.

7.  In the evening while climbing the four flights of stairs to my apartment, you can smell what the people in each apartment are cooking for dinner. It makes me miss things like ovens, multiple pots and pans, and home.

8. My chambre de bonne doesn’t qualify for a mailbox of its own so my mail gets placed in a cupboard on the wall that houses the fuse box…fancy.

9. The day I moved in to my apartment, a friend explained that I wasn’t far from the Musée d’Orsay. That night when I wandered out for a bite to eat, I followed the lights down my street and there it was; she had said it was close, but I wasn’t expecting this. Still in a haze and daze from the past few days, I stood in the evening glow of Paris, taking it in. I couldn’t keep from smiling and laughing at how this had all come together. A few weeks later, I explained to someone where I lived and their reply was, “It’s like you’re living in a film. That’s movie Paris.” And I guess she was right. The Paris that has been in my head for years…that’s exactly where I live. A block from the Orsay, a hop, skip and jump from the Seine, Tuilleries, and Louvre…only someone who knew my heart could have planned it this way.

10. Translated, the name of my street means “beautiful chase.” I find this amazingly perfect because that is afterall, what my journey to get to Paris has been…a beautiful chase of dreams, of fear, of life, doubt, faith, and trust. And the chase continues on as I run after Jesus, the orchesrator of it all.
